What is Heat Capacity?
Heat capacity is the amount of heat energy required to raise the temperature of a substance by 1°C (or 1 K). Specific heat capacity (c) is heat capacity per unit mass. Water has an unusually high specific heat (4.186 J/g·°C), which moderates Earth's climate and makes it ideal as a coolant.

📐 Formula
Q = m × c × ΔT
Q = heat energy (J), m = mass (g), c = specific heat capacity (J/g·°C), ΔT = temperature change (°C or K).
📝 Worked Example
Heating 200g of water from 20°C to 100°C:
Q = 200 × 4.186 × (100−20) = 200 × 4.186 × 80
Q = 66,976 J = 66.98 kJ
📝 How to Use the Calculator
❓ FAQ
What is the specific heat of water?
4.186 J/g·°C (or 1 cal/g·°C). It is among the highest of common substances, which is why water is used in heating systems and as a standard calorie reference.
What is calorimetry?
The science of measuring heat transfer. A calorimeter measures Q by tracking temperature changes of a known substance (water) in an insulated container.
